Travel Tuesday | Zurich

For this week’s Travel Tuesday, we’re going to Zurich.

The fairy-tale city of Zurich is set on the banks of both a river and a lake, with the snow-topped Swiss Alps rising in the background. Clean cobblestone streets hug a hilly terrain, and medieval church spires reach heavenward. Despite its reputation for being the center of old-school international banking and a capital for top-notch chocolate confections, Zurich is also a very modern city that chooses to meander through life at an un-hurried pace.

This international finance capital is blessed with one of the highest qualities of life in the world, making for an exceptionally safe and highly enjoyable visit. While the city is smaller than you might think, there’s plenty to keep you busy, whether you’re wandering the gilded cocoon of the Altstadt (Old Town), lined with glittery watch and jewelry boutiques, private banks, and storied chocolate houses; Or taking in the dynamic, edgy scene that awaits in Zurich West with its art galleries, design boutiques, and trendy eating and drinking establishments. Capping it all is an unparalleled natural beauty, with the serene Limmat River cutting through the city’s heart before opening into vast, shimmering Lake Zurich.
My recommendation for the best hotel in Zurich is The Dolder Grand. This landmark hotel, built in the Swiss rustic style popular at the turn of the 19th century, has hosted Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, and the Rolling Stones, among others. Situated high above Zurich, it offers breathtaking views of the city, the lake, and even the Alps.

Renovated in 2008 by Lord Foster for a cool 385 million Swiss francs, it now features a bold, contemporary edifice that wraps around the turreted original.

Reserve a table at Dolder Grand’s “The Restaurant”, for a once in a lifetime dining experience. The Restaurant serves fresh and innovative gourmet cuisine created by Chef Heiko Nieder. It’s been awarded 2 Michelin stars and is one of the most highly rated restaurants in Zurich.

That’s all for now, I’m Katelyn O’Shaughnessy, join me next week for another Travel Tuesday.
